Clubs

Miranda Cockrell - The Academic Quiz Team competes in with nine other GMC Conference schools in quiz bowl events. Quiz bowl is a game in which two teams compete head-to-head to answer questions from all areas of knowledge including history, literature, science, fine arts, current events, sports, and popular culture. We will have a season, even if we only scrimmage against ourselves! We meet virtually on Tuesdays (email for a link) and in person on Wednesdays in room 114; 3:30 – 4:30 both days.

Giulia Palazzo - The purpose of the Art Club is for students to interact and have fun while learning different styles and kinds of arts with different media.

Jozefien Cataudella - The Asian-American Student Association is a club that is building a community to spread different Asian cultures. Our meetings are held in the HUB on Tuesdays beginning at 3:10PM

Shelbi Burch - The Black African American Student Union is a club that expresses Black African American culture. It allows us to come together as one. We meet bi-weekly (Thursday) from 3:00-4:00PM.

Kelly Bolden - The Cooking for a Cause club spreads awareness and promotes the welfare of others, and to make an impact in the community with different groups like homeless, veterans, elderly, and people with disabilities.

The Dungeons & Dragons Club is a student group focused on collaborative storytelling, creativity, and teamwork through tabletop role-playing games. Members create characters, embark on adventures, overcome challenges, and contribute to building shared stories in an engaging and welcoming environment. Students of all skill levels are encouraged to join.

Current Meetings: Monday and Wednesday, 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Adam Erickson - FCA is a student led club for Lakota West athletes, coaches, and fans who are interested in exploring what it looks like to live a life of faith as a student athlete. We will meet on Thursday mornings before school at 7:00-8:00AM in room 235. We will provide snacks of some sort as well, so come enjoy fellowship with us! 

Jessica Hodges - French Club is a cultural look into French speaking cultures through food, games, and outings.

Jessica Hodges - GSA is a student-run club that brings together LGBTQ and straight students to provide a safe place to support each other and create a platform to fight for racial, gender, LGBTQ, and economic justice.

Colin Heineke and Christine Harper - Hope & Strength is a school-based peer-to-peer, suicide prevention program for students. Hope & Strength members are students nominated by peers at the conclusion of their eighth grade year as trustworthy classmates and are trained to identify at-risk students, provide friendship and seek help from an adult. Students are trained in QPR and learn how to handle crises during after school hours. Hope & Strength’s mission is to spread hope throughout the year and destigmatize mental health issues. Hope & Strength meets on Wednesdays after school in Mrs. Harper’s room C224.

Madeline Van Benschoten - Hope and Strength is a youth mental health promotion and suicide prevention program designed to harness the power of peer social networks to create healthy norms and culture, ultimately preventing suicide, violence, bullying, and substance misuse. The mission of Sources of Strength is to prevent adverse outcomes by increasing wellbeing, help-seeking, resiliency, healthy coping, and belonging. Sources of Strength moves beyond a singular focus on risk factors by utilizing an upstream approach for youth suicide prevention. This upstream model strengthens multiple sources of support, or protective factors, for young people so that when times get hard, they have strengths to rely on. Our meetings will take place on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month, from 3:10-4:00 in room 122. We also participate in community outreach and building campaigns that invite others to engage and interact with our Hope and Strength members.

Advisors Mike Brown and Nicole Roether - HOSA meets every other Wednesday starting Sept. 16 after school until 3:30

Rikki Bell - The I.D.E.A. Student Organization stands for Inclusion – Diversity – Equity – Action. In this organization, students are working on how we can make Lakota a more inclusive and understanding place. It is a place for students to comfortably share their feelings about things going in the world around them and in the building. These students are a direct line to making change both in the district and around the world.

Maria Neco Arroyo - International Club is a group dedicated to celebrating the cultural diversity of our global community. Our mission is to promote understanding, respect, and appreciation of different cultures through engaging activities and meaningful exchanges. We explore the world through:

• Language lessons introducing various global tongues
• Screenings of international films
• Tasting and sharing global cuisines
• Presentations and stories shared by our members about their cultural backgrounds
• Learning and performing traditional songs and dances from around the world
• Creating crafts and decorations that represent different countries
• Discovering unique customs, traditions, and celebrations from diverse cultures

Kristin Henley – Each year, the junior class plans the Junior/Senior Prom. Hone your leadership, organizational, and event planning skills!

Sean Burns – Our purpose is to encourage an interest in and an appreciation of the language, literature, and culture of ancient Greece and Rome and to impart an understanding of the debt of our own culture to that of Classical antiquity.

Mark Moody - Lakota West Chess Club helps promote intellectual growth and has been shown to improve academic performance. The Lakota West Chess club welcomes all levels of players from beginning to advanced. The Chess Club meets every Monday in room 251 after school to practice to improve the skills and strategies of its players. The top 7 players from the chess club will play for the Lakota West Varsity Chess team.

Bob Emig - First and foremost, Helping Hands are required to sign a personal contract to abstain from alcohol, tobacco and any other drugs during their time with the group.  The Helping Hands program offers high school students the opportunity to participate in various outreach events throughout the year.  

Taylor Wood - Mu Alpha Theta is the United States mathematics honor society for high school and two-year college students. In June 2015, it served over 108,000 student members in over 2200 chapters in the United States and in 20 foreign countries

David McMillan - Muslim Student Association is a club that has informational discussions about Muslim Society and History.

Marian Weber – The Lakota chapter of National Honor Society (NHS) is open for students upon completion of their fifth or sixth semester of high school. NHS is a nationwide organization for high school students in the United States and outlying territories, which consists of many chapters in high schools. Selection is based on four criteria: scholarship (academic achievement), leadership, service, and character. The National Honor Society requires some sort of service to the community, school, or other organizations. The time spent working on these projects contributes towards the monthly service hour requirement.  Students that are juniors with a 3.50 GPA (weighted or unweighted) may apply during the NHS application window in the spring of their junior year. 

Evette Harrell - The club's goal is to discuss and learn more about different types of poetry, poets, and philosophers. The club is run by student interest, and the things we read and discuss are voted on by members.

Mary Hofferberth and Shari DeRossett - PreMed Club students will be studying and exploring many topics related to the medical field. Some examples are general neuroanatomy, systems neuroscience, and behavioral neuroscience. There will be some fun interactive activities as well. We will meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month (2nd Thursday - rm 266, 4th Thursday rm 226)

John Nicol -  We meet every other Sunday evening (but it is closed to SAAB members)

Mary Hofferberth - The Science Competitions Club is for students to learn fun topics in science and prepare for science competitions like Science Bowl, Odyssey of the Mind, and others. Competitions to participate in will be chosen by club members together.

Allison Billups and Taylor Cumberledge – Senior Class will organize activities to celebrate the final year students will have at Lakota West High School.

Tricia Becker - The Spanish Club is an organization that enriches knowledge of the Hispanic Culture on our campus.  All Spanish Classes 9 through 12 are welcome.

Danielle Popp and Stephanie Finelli- Student Government Association (SGA) meet Mondays once or twice a month, depending on events running. SGA is a student-led organization that plans a number of events and fundraisers throughout the year-most notably, Homecoming, Canned Food Drives, Adopt-A-Child, Hoxworth Blood Drive, Community Outreach Week and more.  Our goal is to boost student morale and give back to the community.

Danielle Popp and Stephanie Finelli- Student Government Association (SGA) meet Wednesdays once or twice a month, depending on events running. SGA is a student-led organization that plans a number of events and fundraisers throughout the year-most notably, Homecoming, Canned Food Drives, Adopt-A-Child, and more.  Our goal is to boost student morale and give back to the community.

John Nicol - Students interested in a technology and engineering fields.  This club participates in local, state, and national level competitions in all STEM fields.  A Butler Tech course enrollment is required.  Fee required. Meeting: Every other Wednesday after school until 3:30pm.

Kelsey Gelhaus - The West Press is a student-run website featuring varying articles about student life, sports, news, arts, and entertainment.

Mary Mahoney - Women Empowering Women meets 2nd and 4th Mondays in room 146 after school. Empowerment group that focuses on self-esteem and service.

Jennifer Circello - Women in Cyber Security is a club that aims to encourage and support more women in their pursuit of a career in cyber security.

Mary Hofferberth - The purpose of Women in STEM is to help women explore and find interests in STEM fields traditionally dominated by men. We will meet the 3rd Tuesday of every month in room 266 after school.

Jennifer Parrett - You are invited to the Writing Club! Every first and third Wednesday a meeting is held to inspire, assist, and connect with other writers in a space meant for creating and sharing. We will have optional prompts every meeting to spark new ideas and different views. We also will provide additional essay help and snacks! If you are interested in joining our writing club, or just want to come to a meeting, you can find us in room 202 with Mrs. Parrett.
