Tom Bolden Wins Prestigious Paul Brown Excellence in Coaching Award

Tom Bolden Wins Prestigious Paul Brown Excellence in Coaching Award

Tom Bolden, the head football coach at Lakota West High School, has been honored with the 2024 Paul Brown Excellence in Coaching Award by the Cincinnati Bengals. This prestigious annual accolade by the Bengals recognizes outstanding high school football coaches in the region. Bolden was recognized by the Bengals at their recent game against the Denver Broncos.

“Tom is one of one. There is nobody else like Coach Bolden,” said Lakota West Principal Scott Laman. “His work ethic, authenticity and relentless energy resonate with anyone around him.”

Bolden's remarkable leadership has transformed the Lakota West football program since he took over in 2019. Under his guidance, the Firebirds have made it to the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) playoffs every season. The team achieved an 11-2 record in 2024, securing their fourth Greater Miami Conference title under Bolden, and reached the OHSAA Division I, Region 4 semifinal.

Bolden’s impact at Lakota West can be seen in the team’s consistent achievements and competitive spirit. With an overall record of 61-13 at West, Bolden boasts an impressive .824 winning percentage. Before his tenure, the Firebirds had a 118-110 record with five playoff appearances over 22 years. Prior to joining Lakota West, Bolden spent 12 seasons as the head coach at Colerain High School, where he amassed a 132-21 record.

The impact of Bolden extends well beyond the football field. “Being around (Coach

Bolden) forces you to become a better version of yourself,” explained Laman. “Each year, approximately 2,800 students know Coach not only as a great football coach, but as their ‘go to’ person in the school. He will treat all students as if they’re his own, installing values, work ethic and character traits that all moms and dads want for their sons and daughters.”

“Coach Bolden’s passion and work ethic at everything he does is second to none,” said Lakota West Athletic Director and Assistant Principal Scott Kaufman. “Coach B walks into a room and the lights get a little brighter with the energy and enthusiasm he brings into it. All of our students and teachers respond so positively to him - he is the one you call when you need help, and he is always there.”

Laman agrees. “Simply put, Coach is more than a coach. He affects the entire culture of the building.”

Bolden is the 24th recipient of the Paul Brown Excellence in Coaching Award, joining a distinguished list of past winners. This recognition highlights his dedication, strategic foresight, and the positive influence he has on his players and the broader community. Along with the award, the Bengals have made a generous $10,000 donation to the Lakota West High School athletic department for the football program.
